Have conversations with your baby or child, at meal times, bedtime, playtime. Listen carefully to their babbles and sounds, and respond. “Ba!” “Really? Is that what you think? We’ll have to check with mama.” “Mooooo!” “Yes, I see the moon! It is beooootiful!” “Kime!” “Did you climb all the way up here?” Read aloud every […]
Happy New Year from the Nest
December Joy
Why art is important for little children: It may seem that craft projects like these do little to enrich the lives of very small children. Not true! With a project like the Santa above, I start with a plan piece of paper and help children use a brush or a sponge to paint most of the page red. I cut out the shapes and put them together. The children stick the cotton on to the areas with dabs of glue. All of these activities develop social and motor skills. I carefully write their name on the art work. The daycare is decorated with an ever-changing gallery of art. It is a wonderful day when a small child can recognize their name or art and point it out to family.
Little by little, the children learn to paint with a brush with less assistance. They have a tactile experience by putting on the cotton. They see their name on their art work. They start to point out their artwork to their parents. It is a lovely journey. The “mistletoes” and the trees are for the parents but the experience with art is for the children!
Happy holidays!

Even the tiniest of our students loves to move the paint-brush back and forth! We used our read-aloud book shelf as inspiration for art projects using printables from on-line. The beautiful colors reflect each child’s unique brush strokes of vibrant paints: these photos are not retouched! We used Spot Markers for the snail’s shells and I […]

It is a great time to get outside and walk around! We are collecting fall leaves and pinecones to closely study and use in crafts. Walking around outside is first step in encouraging children to love nature. Great book for the school aged children: Seed Folks by Paul Fleishman.
